One Response to Shohola-Barryville Suspension Bridge

  1. Scotty Greenberger says:

There were 3 bridges built on the same site.

The 1st bridge was a single span and lasted 3 years as it was not stable in wind storms. Thus the 19 foot wide roadway twisted and fell into the Delaware.

The 2nd bridge was a 2 span bridge as it had a center supporting pier added. It lasted longer until two heavily laden mule drawn wagons were going in the same direction on the same span. The excessive weight collapsed the span and all went into the river. The mules died and some cargo was lost.

The 3rd bridge again at the same site was reinforced and lasted until 1941 when the Pennsylvania and New York Bridge commission opened a new bridge somewhat south which lasted over 70 years. It was replaced by the current bridge.
