Fourth of July
Every fourth of July the Pond Eddy Church had a big deal for dinner. Tables were setup with covers. There was a watermelon eating contest and burlap sack races. At night there was a baseball game and then fireworks. We made ice cream in a six-quart size ice cream freezer.—Farewell to Eldred, p. 143.
1922 Summer Season
The season at Highland Cottage on Washington Lake, Yulan, this year, is the most successful in the history of that establishment. Probably the greatest night was an ambitious show and lawn party held at the end of last week…Estella Waterman performed the diving Venus act from the center cupola on the cottage roof.
At Eldred, the whortleberry season is on and thousands of the summer vacationers spend their time in picking the delicious fruit from the blue laden bushes. Although the season is just beginning, so plentiful is the crop that it is drawing hosts of summer folk who otherwise would not go to the wooded region.—The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Sunday, July 30, 1922. July 1928
Piermont Hotel, George Boyd. Accommodates 100 guests. Overlooking lake. Altitude 2,000 ft. All improvements (including running water in every room). Canoeing, bathing, fishing, dancing, tennis, golf. Rates $18 up.
July 1929
In October 1928 it was decided to build a road from Yulan to the Minisink Battlefield Site. The road would be about three miles long and form an easy approach to the battlefield and ample room for the parking of automobiles. It would take workmen several weeks of cutting and removing trees and brush from the site for the Minisink Battlefield Ceremony which was to take place on July 22, 1929.

July 1937
Thursday, July 8, Anna and Jim picked berries at the old Leavenworth Echo Hill Farm. Saturday Ella bought a crate of raspberries from Wilson’s for $6.40.
Once again it was time to preserve the summer produce. Tuesday July 27, Ella canned nine quarts of string beans. Friday Anna, Jim, and Ella picked 21 quarts of blueberries, and canned 18 quarts. Saturday, the last day of July, Ella canned ten quarts of beans. Garfield helped cut hay on Clinton’s place.—Farewell to Eldred, p. 175-6.
July 1938
Ella canned 42 quarts of cherries on July 20. Sunday, July 24, there were 27 bridges that went out in the county because there had been so much rain and flooding. Tuesday Ella canned 56 quarts of beans.—Farewell to Eldred, p. 186.
