Sand Beach

Sand Beach 1906.

I so appreciate the comments Halfway Brook readers have been making.

I continue to group information and photos into the years 1920 to 1950 (plus or minus) for book 3, and today ran across this envelope from Sand Beach.

I have heard some stories of those who were often at Sand Beach on Highland Lake. That is one of the places the guests at Mountain Grove House (my Austin grandparents boarding house) would go for “bathing” (swimming) or boating.

Does anyone know the history of Sand Beach or have photos?

My family stayed at Highland Lake, too. We actually called it:”Finks”!

I remember Mr. and Mrs. Fink quite well. This was from 1967-71. Extended family went there occasionally later throughout the years. I was 12 in 1970. The memories are wonderful. There was not a square inch of those grounds that I did not explore. A family we met at “Finks”, came from Bay Ridge. The Batsons. Such a nice family. I actually remember the sign at the entrance to “Finks”; “Sand Beach Bathing Fun” Great memories. I hope I go back.

Wonderful postcard! I spent time at Sand Beach on Highland Lake throughout my childhood (1960s on). It was owned by Charlie Fink, an immigrant from Germany, and is now run by his son. It is still going strong!

  3. It was around 1962, 63 ( somewhat later than1906 of course) that we frequented Sand Beach at Highland Lake. By that time, we were renting a private home in Yulan for the summer ( our former accomodations at Woodland Cottages in Barryville were long behind us with the sale of that property to a camp). Sand Beach was a lovely place where there was good swimming and boating, a concession stand and many nice families to make friends with. We purchased a season pass each summer and enjoyed the time spent there. I think it is still in existence.
