  1. Mary Eschels says:

My grandparents, Michael and Elizabeth Weber, owed Pine Beach Inn. They sold it about 1959.

  2. Loretta Bell says:

My parents owned the PINE HILL LODGE in Highland Lake from 1961 until 1984. Before my parents, the Lutz family owned the lodge…I believe it was known as the PIERMONT HOTEL years ago. Not sure if that was the name when the Lutz’s owned it. I will do a little more research and check with my mother and post again. Currently, the Lodge is owned by the Gilmore’s who renovated the main building into a beautiful private home.

LES: Thank you for your comment Loretta. The Piermont Hotel was originally owned by the Boyds and is mentioned in both Echo Hill and Mountain Grove and Farewell to Eldred. Pine Hill Lodge is mentioned in Farewell to Eldred.

  3. Mary Austin says:

Alice McCaffrey’s place was in Pond Eddy.

  4. Rich Hubeny says:

My family, three generations, used to vacation there every summer. It was always the high point of summer.

I’m 65 now but still remember everything about Maple Grove Farm. One thing that was unique was the meal bell and when you left somebody would ring the bell again.

Mike Sherwood, if you see this would you email me any old/new photos that you might have.

  5. Christopher Frey says:

My grandparents, Charles and Gertrude Frey, had a full partner all the years they owned Maple Grove Farm on Corkscrew Road. Her name was Minnie Nitzsche and I always refer to her as my “bonus grandmother” because she treated the Frey boys as blood relatives. Her husband Fred was a partner as well, but he passed away long before I was born and, unfortunately, I know very little about him.

Like every boarding house owner/partner, Minnie worked long and hard all summer. She handled the the laundry function as well as the bookkeeping and “marketing” for the boarding house. With several long term employees she managed to keep all the linens clean and ironed for all sixty guests despite having to rely on the sun and air to dry them.

I will never understand how they managed that, but they did.

We live at the former Crandall place,Yulan,N.Y.

The old boarding house is now gone, I remember it as a child.

We built our present home on the old foundation. It was called Cold Spring House.

    Regards, Mike Sherwood.
