1935 Ice in the Delaware River

John Briggs, Freddy Dieckhoff, and Mary Briggs next to the Delaware River in winter.

My mom grew up in Barryville with the Delaware River viewable from their front porch. Here she is with her brother John and a friend Fred Dieckoff near the Delaware at flood stage when the ice is breaking up.

Hello! Just found your blog, my family bought a house on river road in 2021 and I’m curious whether you might know anything about the history of our house if your Mom grew up on the road. Or perhaps our house was hers! The address is 38, it’s three doors down from the church on a hill. This blog is a treasure trove, so excited to peruse all these wonderful stories and photos!

Louise: Hello! Thank you so much for your comment. If you go to this link: http://halfwaybrook.com/?p=4321 or put “1942 Flooding” in the search, you will see a house that I think was two down from the Methodist Parsonage where my mother lived, though the parsonage is no longer there.

Perhaps one of the Halfway Brook readers can give you more information. All three books are in the Sunshine Library. Book 3: Farewell to Eldred has maps of some of the buildings and most of the Boarding Houses in the area pre-1950, though not the houses on River Road.
